The Blinking Behemoth
The sailors stare over the side into the inky depths. The stars overhead covered by cloud layer leaves the sea close to vantablack. The only sound the slow lapping of waves against the wooden sides of the boat. As they stare in, one points with a shaking finger at something within the water. A down in the depths light blinks slowly, it ebbs and pulses a magnetic white yellow. It seems to bob within the waters, darting around, plunging and lunging in quick figure eights.
As the sailors watch confused the light pushes through the solid black depths. Still infrequently pulsing it seems to ride the currents upwards. The men are locked in a trance like state. They struggle to take eyes off the mystical sea sight. The light stops suddenly then spikes towards the surface sitting on the surge.
Gathering into row boats the men make through the float towards the orb. It's dazzling golden light draws them in, closer and closer they come until they realise what they have done. Connected to the blazing sphere via a flesh tube is a horror from the depths. Milky white eyes stare forwards, a mouth full of metre long spear teeth jut in every direction. The mouth slowly opens and the silhouettes of mermen are the last thing the sailors see.
